What you'll need:

  • 2 x pieces of plain A4 paper
  • Sticky tape
  • A sharp pencil
  • A ruler

What to do:

  • Fix the paper to a hard, flat floor surface using sticky tape on each of the 4 corners.
  • Always measure your child's feet without shoes, but with socks on. The socks should be no thicker or finer that your child's normal socks.
  • Place one of your child's feet in the centre of the paper. Your child should be stood up to ensure that you get an accurate measurement.
  • Using the pencil, trace around the outline of your child's foot. Do not angle the pencil, but instead keep the pencil up-right.
  • Working from the widest parts of the foot outline and using the ruler, draw 4 straight lines to form a box.
  • Do the same for the other foot using the 2nd piece of paper
  • Measure the length of the 2 tracings using the boxes that you've just draw, and write down the longest measurement (do not round up at this point). You should always buy shoes to fit your child's largest foot.
  • Using a tracing method will have added a little to the overall measurement and so to compensate for this you need to subtract 3 mm, we've added a column to the chart to help with this bit.
